Joining the Ultimate Education program was a good decision. The program helped me to understand the test better. I was finally able to score 8.0 in the IELTS test. Thank you EU.

This course gave me a further understanding of the IELTS test as it was taught by experts. They also didn’t hesitate to provide a free additional course on grammar so that we could get better results. I really got more out of what I paid for.

What is the cost of the JLPT test?

The JLPT (Nihongo Nouryoku Shiken) test fee varies depending on the level taken (N1, N2, N3, N4, or N5) and the country where you take the test. In Indonesia, the registration fee is set by the local organizing committee in cooperation with The Japan Foundation. Generally, fees for higher levels (N1, N2) are slightly more expensive than lower levels (N3, N4, N5). For the most accurate and up-to-date fee information, it is highly recommended to visit the official JLPT organizer’s website in Indonesia or contact an official JLPT registration center in your city when the registration period opens.

The JLPT test is held in several major cities in Indonesia. The exact locations of the test centers may change each test period, but usually include cities such as Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Medan, Denpasar, and Makassar. Local JLPT organizers (usually higher education institutions or designated Japanese language centers) will announce the list of cities and test center locations a few months before the test date. You can find detailed information about test center locations through the official global JLPT website or the JLPT organizing committee’s website in Indonesia.

The JLPT test is generally held twice a year globally:

  • First Sunday of July.
  • First Sunday of December.

However, not all test centers worldwide (including in Indonesia) administer the test in both periods. Some locations may only hold the test once a year (usually in December or July). Be sure to check the specific schedule applicable in Indonesia or at your target test center through official announcements from The Japan Foundation or the local committee. The registration period usually opens a few months before the test date.

The JLPT passing certificate and score report you receive do not have an official expiration date set by the test administrators (The Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services). This means the certificate is formally valid for life.

However, it is important to note that some institutions or companies requesting a JLPT certificate (e.g., for study applications, scholarships, or employment) may have their own internal policies regarding the age limit of the certificate they accept. They might prefer certificates obtained within the last few years (e.g., 2-5 years) because language proficiency can change over time. Always be sure to check the specific requirements of the institution you are applying to.

The JLPT test has five proficiency levels:

  • N1 (Most Difficult/Advanced): Ability to understand Japanese in a variety of complex and abstract situations. Capable of understanding news, editorials, lectures, and conversations at natural speed with varied nuances.
  • N2 (Upper Intermediate): Ability to understand Japanese used in everyday situations and various other situations at a higher level. Capable of understanding news articles, reviews, and general conversations well.
  • N3 (Intermediate): A bridge between N4 and N2. Ability to understand Japanese used in everyday situations to a certain extent. Capable of reading texts on specific topics and understanding daily conversations at a near-natural speed.
  • N4 (Lower Intermediate): Ability to understand basic Japanese. Capable of reading and understanding simple sentences about daily topics written with basic vocabulary and kanji. Capable of following slowly spoken daily conversations.
  • N5 (Most Basic/Beginner): Ability to understand Japanese at the most basic level. Capable of reading and understanding typical expressions and sentences written in hiragana, katakana, and basic kanji. Capable of listening to and understanding short conversations about daily topics spoken slowly.

Each level measures increasing ability in terms of vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, and listening comprehension.

Generally, the JLPT for all levels (N1 to N5) tests three main components:

Language Knowledge (文字・語彙・文法 – Moji, Goi, Bunpou) / Language Knowledge (Vocabulary/Grammar): This section tests your knowledge of Japanese characters (Kanji), vocabulary (Goi), and grammar (Bunpou).

Reading (読解 – Dokkai) / Reading: This section tests your ability to understand various types of written texts in Japanese, from short sentences to long passages, depending on the level.

Listening (聴解 – Choukai) / Listening: This section tests your ability to understand spoken information in Japanese, such as conversations, announcements, or news, also with difficulty adjusted to the level.

For N1 and N2, the “Language Knowledge” and “Reading” sections are often combined into one exam session. There are no speaking or free-form writing components in the standard JLPT test.

Possessing a JLPT certificate offers various benefits, especially if you have interests or needs related to Japan:

  • Study Requirements in Japan: Many universities, vocational schools, and language schools in Japan require a certain JLPT level certificate (usually N2 or N1 for undergraduate/postgraduate programs) as proof of Japanese language proficiency.
  • Career Opportunities: Japanese companies or companies with business ties to Japan often seek employees with Japanese language skills proven by a JLPT certificate. This can open wider job opportunities and better salaries.
  • Promotion or Language Allowance: Some companies offer language allowances or consider JLPT certificates for promotion for employees proficient in Japanese.
  • Personal Ability Measurement: JLPT is an objective standard for measuring your Japanese language proficiency level and tracking your learning progress.
  • Immigration Requirements (in some cases): For some types of visas or preferential immigration programs to Japan, a JLPT score can be one of the consideration points.
  • Access to Information and Culture: With higher Japanese language skills, you can better enjoy Japanese culture (movies, music, literature) and access information directly from Japanese-language sources.

The best and most accurate sources for official JLPT sample questions are:

  • Official JLPT Website (www.jlpt.jp): This site provides sample questions for each test level. These sample questions give an overview of the format and types of questions that will appear.
  • Official Practice Book “New Japanese-Language Proficiency Test Sample Questions”: The Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES) publish this official sample question collection, which covers all test sections for each level.
  • JLPT Preparation Books from Reputable Publishers: There are many textbooks, practice books, and JLPT test simulation books published by various publishers in Japan and other countries. Be sure to choose books that are appropriate for your target level and have a good reputation.
  • Mobile Applications and Practice Websites: Several mobile applications and websites also provide JLPT practice questions, but ensure their quality and conformity with the latest test format.
