Joining the Ultimate Education program was a good decision. The program helped me to understand the test better. I was finally able to score 8.0 in the IELTS test. Thank you EU.

This course gave me a further understanding of the IELTS test as it was taught by experts. They also didn’t hesitate to provide a free additional course on grammar so that we could get better results. I really got more out of what I paid for.

What is the cost of the TOPIK test?

The TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) registration fee varies depending on the type of test taken (TOPIK I or TOPIK II) and the country and test center where you register. In Indonesia, test fees are set by the National Institute for International Education (NIIED) of South Korea and managed by local organizers (often the Embassy of the Republic of Korea or Korean Cultural Center Indonesia – KCCI, as well as designated universities or Korean language institutions). Generally, the fee for TOPIK II is slightly higher than TOPIK I. For the most accurate and up-to-date fee information, you are advised to visit the official KCCI website or a TOPIK organizing center in Indonesia when the registration period opens.

The TOPIK test in Indonesia is usually held in several major cities with significant Korean communities or Korean language enthusiasts. Test center locations are generally:

  • Jakarta: Often at the Korean Cultural Center Indonesia (KCCI) or universities with Korean language programs.
  • Other major cities: Such as Surabaya, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Semarang, and sometimes other cities depending on demand and cooperation with local institutions.

The exact list of test center locations for each test period will be announced by KCCI or the official TOPIK organizer in Indonesia. You can check their website for the latest information.

The TOPIK test is held globally several times a year. NIIED announces the international test schedule for the entire year. In Indonesia, the TOPIK test is generally administered:

  • Two to four times a year. The exact dates may vary, but there are often sessions in April, July, October, or November.
  • Not all global test dates are offered in every country. KCCI or the local organizer will announce which dates will be held in Indonesia along with their registration periods.

Schedule information can be found on the KCCI website or their official social media. Registration usually opens a few months before the test date, and quotas are often limited.

Your TOPIK test result certificate is valid for two (2) years from the date of the test result announcement (not the test date). The expiration date will be stated on your certificate. This two-year validity period is important to note if you plan to use your TOPIK certificate for scholarship applications (such as KGSP/GKS), university admission in Korea, or professional purposes. After two years, you may need to retake the test if the institution you are applying to requires a valid certificate.

The TOPIK test is divided into two main types, which further encompass several proficiency levels:

TOPIK I (Basic Level): Measures basic Korean language proficiency. Consists of two sub-levels:

  • Level 1: Basic ability for simple daily conversations, understanding basic sentences, and producing simple sentences.
  • Level 2: Ability to participate in daily conversations on familiar topics, understanding and using approximately 1,500-2,000 vocabulary words.

TOPIK II (Intermediate to Advanced Level): Measures intermediate to advanced Korean language proficiency required for studying or working in Korea. Consists of four sub-levels:

  • Level 3: Ability to perform basic language functions necessary for daily life in Korea and understand basic socio-cultural content.
  • Level 4: Ability to understand news, simple newspaper articles, and various socio-cultural topics. Able to use common work-related expressions.
  • Level 5: Ability to perform language functions at a certain level required for research or professional work. Able to understand and discuss less familiar topics in politics, economics, and society.
  • Level 6 (Most Difficult): Ability to perform language functions accurately and fluently for research or professional work. Able to understand and use language in various contexts without significant difficulty.

You choose to take either TOPIK I or TOPIK II when registering. Your score on TOPIK I will determine if you pass Level 1 or 2. Your score on TOPIK II will determine if you pass Level 3, 4, 5, or 6.

The skills tested in TOPIK differ between TOPIK I and TOPIK II:

TOPIK I (Levels 1-2):

  • Listening (듣기 – Deutgi): Multiple choice.
  • Reading (읽기 – Ilgi): Multiple choice.

There is no writing or speaking section for TOPIK I.

TOPIK II (Levels 3-6):

  • Listening (듣기 – Deutgi): Multiple choice.
  • Writing (쓰기 – Sseugi): Filling in sentences, writing short explanations, and writing a long essay (argumentative or descriptive).
  • Reading (읽기 – Ilgi): Multiple choice.

There is no speaking component in the standard TOPIK test currently, although there are plans to introduce a separate TOPIK Speaking test in the future or it may have already started trial in some countries.

Possessing a TOPIK certificate with the appropriate level provides various benefits:

  • Study in South Korea: A primary requirement for international students wishing to enroll in universities (undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral) or language programs in South Korea. The required level varies (generally TOPIK Level 3-4 for undergraduate, and Level 4-5 and above for postgraduate).
  • Korean Government Scholarship (KGSP/GKS): A TOPIK certificate of a certain level is often one of the important criteria and can provide additional points in the selection for this prestigious scholarship.
  • Job Opportunities in Korea or Korean Companies: Many companies in South Korea or Korean companies abroad seek employees who have Korean language skills proven by a TOPIK certificate, especially for positions requiring interaction with Korean speakers.
  • Visa and Residency Requirements: For some types of visas (e.g., work visas, spouse visas, or permanent residency applications) in South Korea, a TOPIK score may be required or provide an advantage.
  • Language Proficiency Recognition: As an international standard for measuring your Korean language proficiency level.
  • Cultural Access: Facilitates understanding of Korean popular culture (K-Pop, K-Drama), literature, and other media.

The best sources for official and accurate TOPIK sample questions are:

  • Official TOPIK Website (www.topik.go.kr): This site usually provides sample questions (기출문제 – gichul munje) from previous test periods that can be downloaded for free. This is the most authentic source.
  • Materials from NIIED: The National Institute for International Education (NIIED), as the administrator, may also release materials or test guides.
  • TOPIK Preparation Books: Many TOPIK textbooks and practice books are published in Korea and other countries, specifically designed for each level. Look for books that have a good reputation and align with the latest test format.
  • Mobile Applications and Practice Websites: There are various applications and websites that offer TOPIK practice questions, but ensure their quality and accuracy.
