What is the cost of the HSK test?
The HSK (Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì – Chinese Proficiency Test) fee varies depending on the level taken (HSK Level 1 to Level 6) and the official test center where you register. Generally, fees for higher levels will be more expensive than lower levels. Additionally, if you take the HSKK (Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǒuyǔ Kǎoshì – Chinese Proficiency Spoken Test), there will be a separate fee. For the most accurate and up-to-date fee information, it is recommended to contact an official HSK test center in your city (usually located at universities, Chinese language course institutions, or Confucius Institutes) or check their official websites when the registration period opens.
Where is the HSK test held in Indonesia?
The HSK test is held in various cities in Indonesia through official test centers that have received authorization from Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters. Some major cities that typically have HSK test centers include Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan, Bandung, Semarang, Yogyakarta, and other cities with active Chinese language communities or educational institutions. A complete list of official HSK test centers in Indonesia and their contact information can be found through the official Chinese Testing International website (www.chinesetest.cn) or by contacting a Confucius Institute or reputable Chinese language institution in your area.
When are HSK test dates typically held?
The HSK test (both paper-based and internet-based) is held several times a year. HSK test schedules are globally determined by Chinese Testing International (CTI) and are usually announced at the beginning of the year for the entire year. Test frequency may vary between test centers; some centers may administer tests almost every month, while others may only do so a few times a year. You can find the official HSK test calendar on the CTI website (www.chinesetest.cn). Also, be sure to check the specific schedule offered by the nearest HSK test center in your city, as they will follow the global schedule but may not offer all dates. Registration usually opens a few weeks to a few months before the test date.
How long is my HSK certificate valid?
Your HSK test result certificate is valid for two (2) years from the date you took the test. The test date will be stated on your certificate. This two-year validity period is important to note, especially if you plan to use your HSK certificate for scholarship applications, university admission in China, or professional purposes. After two years, although you still have the certificate, some institutions may consider it no longer relevant to demonstrate your current Chinese language proficiency and may ask you to retake the test. Always check the score validity requirements of the institution you are applying to.
How many levels are there in the HSK test and what are the differences?
The commonly known HSK structure (before the new 2021 standards) consists of six written levels:
- HSK Level 1: Master 150 basic words, able to understand and use very simple Chinese phrases.
- HSK Level 2: Master 300 words, able to communicate simply and directly on familiar daily topics.
- HSK Level 3: Master 600 words, able to communicate at a basic level for daily, academic, and work purposes. Able to communicate while traveling in China.
- HSK Level 4: Master 1200 words, able to discuss various topics in Chinese and interact with native speakers at a high level of fluency.
- HSK Level 5: Master 2500 words, able to read Chinese newspapers and magazines, enjoy Chinese films and dramas, and deliver full speeches.
- HSK Level 6 (Most Difficult): Master 5000 words or more, able to easily understand spoken or written information in Chinese and express oneself fluently both orally and in writing.
It is important to note that new standards, “Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education,” have been introduced, which divide proficiency into “Three Stages and Nine Levels.” However, the implementation of tests based on these new standards is still gradual. Currently, the old HSK Levels 1-6 are still widely administered. Be sure to check the applicable format and levels when you register.
What components are tested in the HSK (and HSKK if relevant)?
The HSK test (common Levels 1-6) focuses on receptive skills and limited productive skills:
HSK Levels 1 & 2: Consist of two sections: Listening and Reading.
HSK Levels 3, 4, 5, & 6: Consist of three sections: Listening, Reading, and Writing. The writing section varies from constructing sentences (Level 3) to writing short essays (Level 6).
In addition to the written HSK test, there is a separate spoken proficiency test, the HSKK (Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǒuyǔ Kǎoshì). The HSKK test is divided into three levels:
- Basic HSKK
- Intermediate HSKK
- Advanced HSKK
Some institutions or programs may require both HSK and HSKK scores.

- Official Mobile Applications: There are several official mobile applications or ones recommended by Hanban/CTI that provide HSK practice questions.
