The cost of the SAT test varies depending on your location and whether you’re taking the SAT with Essay. The base registration fee covers the standard SAT test, while there’s an additional fee for the optional Essay section. International students typically pay a higher registration fee that includes a regional fee. Additional costs may apply for late registration, test center changes, or sending score reports to more than the allotted number of colleges.

Fee waivers are available for eligible students in the U.S. and its territories. For the most current and accurate pricing information specific to your testing location (whether domestic or international), please visit the official College Board website at collegeboard.org. All fee details are clearly outlined during the registration process.

The SAT is administered at official test centers worldwide. In the United States, these are typically high schools or colleges that have been approved by the College Board. International test centers (including those in Indonesia) are often located at international schools or educational institutions that meet College Board standards.

When you register for the SAT through the College Board website, you’ll be able to search for available test centers near you. International students should note that test center availability may be more limited outside the U.S. It’s recommended to register early to secure a spot at your preferred location, as popular test centers may fill up quickly.

The SAT is offered seven times a year in the United States: typically in August, October, November, December, March, May, and June. International test dates may differ slightly and are generally offered five times a year: in October, December, March, May, and August.

All test dates, registration deadlines, and score release dates are published well in advance on the College Board website (collegeboard.org). When planning your test date, consider your college application deadlines and allow sufficient time for preparation. Many students take the SAT more than once to improve their scores, so it’s wise to schedule your first attempt several months before your earliest application deadline.

SAT scores remain valid indefinitely in the College Board’s records, and you can request score reports at any time. However, most colleges have their own policies regarding score validity. The general standard is that scores are considered current if they’re from tests taken within the last 5 years.

Some colleges may accept older scores, while others (particularly competitive institutions) might prefer or require more recent results. Certain scholarship programs may have different validity requirements as well. It’s essential to check directly with each college or scholarship program you’re applying to for their specific policies regarding score age.

The SAT consists of four main sections, plus an optional Essay:

Evidence-Based Reading: Tests comprehension and reasoning skills through passages from literature, historical documents, social sciences, and natural sciences.

Writing and Language: Assesses grammar, vocabulary in context, and editing skills through passages covering various subjects.

Math (No Calculator): A 25-minute section focusing on algebra, problem-solving, and data analysis without calculator use.

Math (Calculator): A 55-minute section covering advanced math concepts including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and data analysis where calculator use is permitted.

Essay (Optional): A 50-minute analytical writing task where students analyze a provided source text. While optional, some colleges require or recommend it.

The test lasts approximately 3 hours without the Essay, or 3 hours and 50 minutes with the Essay. All sections are designed to reflect the knowledge and skills most important for college readiness and success.
